This is crazy. China put a data centre underwater. Like in the ocean. And we have no idea what this is gonna do to the environment. The servers are sitting inside sealed capsules 35 meters deep off the coast of Hainan. Cooling can take 40% of a data centre's electricity, but the ocean cools everything for free. And the servers themselves never touch salt water because they sit inside a sealed chamber filled with nitrogen gas. And this is not an experiment. It's already running 7,000 DeepSeek queries per second and China is planning to open 100 more. The crazy thing is that Microsoft did it first in 2018. It was called Project Natick. They sealed 855 servers in one pod and run this experiment for two years. And the results were great. Servers were eight times more reliable underwater than on land and failure rate was only 0.7% versus a 6%. But then they killed the project. And that's because when you seal a pod and sink it to the ocean floor, you cannot just easily open it up and swap GPUs or add servers. But China looked at that and said, well, we'll take it. And they went from pilot to commercial deployment in under 30 months. Meanwhile, the US is looking in the opposite direction, literally trying to put data centres in space. But this takes years while China underwater data centres are already running. But of course, there is the elephant in the room. When those servers heat up, the warm water has to go somewhere and that's right back in the ocean. Microsoft tested this with their single pod and said that water got warmer only by 0.003 degrees. But China is planning 100 of them and that warmth stacks up. And we don't have any research on what this could do to the ocean. If this is news to you, chances are it is news for most people.
