Fake or anonymous accounts are not going to help you because everything that you ever typed online is enough to identify you. Researchers were able to reverse engineer anonymous Hacker News and Reddit profiles back to real LinkedIn accounts. In the first experiment, they took 338 Hacker News profiles and asked AI to find the real people behind them. And AI identified 67%. Then they did the reverse. They took 1000 LinkedIn profiles and asked AI to find their anonymous Hacker News accounts. Inside a pool of 89,000 users, Gemini reconstructed the anonymous profiles and ChatGPT matched them to the real people. Working together, they found the right match 45% of the time. And if you talked a lot about a certain topic on Reddit, Gemini will find you. For example, people that talked about movies on Reddit in 10 or more chats were found 48% of the time. And if you had another internet life under another name, you guessed it. Gemini and ChatGPT can find your old and new account and match them together. And according to the authors, there is no protection except don't post online. This is very serious. Stuff like this used to require hours and skilled investigators. But now everyone with an API key and $3 can do it. What can go wrong, right? But hey, on the plus side, if you're a troller, I will find you.
