Can you make money on YouTube Shorts? Yes…but it’s complicated! As an unofficial YouTube girly, I'm here on short form. I get asked a lot of questions about YouTube Shorts specifically. Often people ask me one of two things. 1. Can you make money on YouTube shorts? And 2. Is it worth it for me to take my old content and put it on YouTube shorts? And I wanna show you some realistic numbers that can help contextualize my answer. So when I say realistic, I mean if you want to compare apples to apples. So this is real client data. So this is a client's video. That's a short form video that made about $4,000. And this is one of their highest performing shorts that they have and their highest earning shorts. So 4,000, 5,000. Relatively apples to apples when it comes to how much money these single pieces of content brought in. How many views did it take to get these numbers? For the short form, it took 27 million views. That's a lot. And that is not always an easy benchmark for people to achieve when it comes to viewership. Now, are shorts views easier to attain? Of course, because of the infinite scroll feed, the nature of that, you're gonna get more views on average than any long form. That being said, how many views did it take the long form to make more money than that short? 650,000. I mean, that's a lot of views still, but it's not 27 million. So again, these numbers are just to help you understand the context of monetization and why, more often than not, I'm recommending long form content because it is quite literally more bang for your buck. You're having a deeper relationship with your audience, and you're probably making more money if you're optimizing your content to get even less views than, you know, 27 million, but still a good amount of views generally. But that being said, is it worth it for you to post on shorts? Absolutely, I think so. Especially now that YouTube shorts is a lot better than it was when it was first introduced in terms of integrating your audience. Something I will say is still incredibly relevant is that if you are successful on TikTok, on Instagram reels, whatever it is, if you're successful on short form and then you post all of your stuff on YouTube shorts and you start to see momentum and traction and subscribers and you're hitting these big numbers and you're like, whoa. Do not let that inflate what your long form numbers might look like, because still, there is a separation between the short viewer and the long form viewer. I have personally worked with a lot of clients who have made tens of thousands, like over 50,000 subscribers just from shorts, and they can't crack 300 views on a long form video. Two different audiences, two different ways that you need to approach it. So just keep that in mind when you're thinking about transferring your stuff. If your stuff is going to be in the same topic niche genre, I think it can be worth it. For sure. And if you're okay with potentially gaining subscribers and viewers that don't translate to long form, then it's totally worth it. You can potentially monetize those all on their own, but it is something that is important to say that they don't have a ton of crossover yet. Not for everybody at least.
