Can you code on the new Mac Book Neo?

I tested the MacBook Neo's capabilities and here's what happened. Apple just dropped a 599 dollar MacBook and I put it through a full stress test to see if it's actually worth it for developers, especially those actively learning how to code currently. First, I ran a Python speed benchmark. 10 million iterations were ran in point 288 seconds, which is well below the two second benchmark. I did the same thing with node and was still impressed with its time of point 540. Next I downloaded Claude Code and started working on a real project, an animated office for Jean Claude, my Claude Code. Don't mind that. Memory jumped to 6.98 gigabytes used. Keep in mind, we only have 8 total. Memory pressure turned yellow, but an interesting thing did happen here. Swap jumped to 204 megabytes. This means the computer was running so low on RAM that it proactively started borrowing 204 megabytes from the SSD, but as a user you couldn't feel this at all. So at this point I wanted to mimic my actual workflow. My default browser is Chrome, which does use up more RAM than Safari, and I'm usually watching YouTube in the background while coding. So I pulled up eight Chrome tabs, four of which were actively running YouTube videos, two of which in 4k. Here I would feel a quick catch here and there, but nothing that actually disrupted my workflow. So at this point I pulled up iMovie and tried to export a 22 minute movie, and this is where Neo was damn near unusable. So if you're a creator and an engineer, current or future, that should matter to you. Oh, and one final quick test I did was running Claude Cowork while coding. I gave Cowork a task that did require extended Chrome usage, and here again I felt some catches with memory up to 7.1 gigabytes, but it was in no way unusable. Altogether here's what I ran: Python and Node.JS benchmarks, Claude code on a real project, local dev servers running simultaneously, iMovie exports and a 30 minute Claude Cowork task, along with activity monitor tracking memory the entire time. Some quick things to know before I give my final ruling. Because I am giving this Neo away, I did not sync any of my apple data to this computer. That means that my messages, photos, email and any other data wasn't part of the usage at all. But honestly, if you're a student looking to learn and grow in tech and coding and need a machine that's enjoyable to use, capable and fits a student budget, I think you'll be happy with this.
