Ready with me in Portuguese!! My name is Julia, I was born and I live in Los Angeles. And since I never lived in Brazil, many people ask me how I learned to speak Portuguese. My mom and my dad are Brazilian, and it was always very important for them that I maintained the language. In case they always spoke with me in Portuguese. So much so that when I started school, I didn't speak a word of English. My parents told me that the teacher came to them and said, "You have to teach this girl English, she only speaks Portuguese with me." And my parents responded, "No, we're not going to do that." Because if at home we started speaking English, I would never maintain the Portuguese. So I started in school, an "a little class" as a second language. Which means in English, as a second language. I really learned English like this. But nowadays, since I go to school in English, I live in the United States, my English is better than my Portuguese, unfortunately. But at home, we only speak Portuguese. My younger brother, sometimes we end up speaking English between us. And my parents always get mad and ask us to switch to Portuguese when they hear us. Another thing that helps a lot is the Brazilian community here in Los Angeles. My mom, actually, has a Brazilian supermarket here in Los Angeles, a super market that sells only Brazilian products. Like Sonho de Valsa, Farofa, feijão, those things. And besides that, I also buy from Brazil twice a year. That's it. I read books in Portuguese, but I never wrote an essay or anything academic in Portuguese. And that's it. Kisses!
