A $10 shower curtain from Walmart does the same thing as a $200 softbox. Sometimes better. Both do the exact same job. They diffuse light. Spread it out. Make it softer on your face. The difference is one comes in a fancy box with a brand name and the other one comes from aisle 7. The shower curtain is larger which means a bigger diffusion surface which actually creates softer light than most softboxes. Bigger source equals softer light. That is physics not marketing.
