Why do some people only feel safe when they're busy? The reality is, it's not that they actually feel safer by being busy. It's that the things that normally make them feel unsafe are sort of out of mind because they're distracted from it. In other words, you're not paying attention to it because you're preoccupied with other things. It doesn't mean that those fears aren't there and that your body is still stressed out. It's just consciously you've taken off of it. That's why it's important to have downtime, when you're not distracted. That means no gadgets, no screens, no other people, no reading material, and your thoughts because that's the context within which you're going to actually confront whatever it is struggling with the whole time that you're distracted. A person has a sprained ankle and they take morphine so they don't feel it. They're sort of walking on the sprained ankle because they're numbed up, they don't feel actually injured. So it's important to remove the distractions, just to be completely raw, feel whatever it is that you are feeling and deal with it.
