I've seen people who get sober while they are still literally living in a crack house because that's where they live. And that's where they hit rock bottom and they find recovery. And eventually, yeah, they move out. But at first, that's where they are surrounded by the old triggers. And conversely, I've seen hundreds of times people who go to the five-star treatment centers, all the professional help, get sober and they can't get sober. And not only this happens once, for two treatments, for three treatments, for four treatments. What this tells me is something that really every addict knows, which is your sobriety doesn't depend on your circumstances. That's the excuse every active addict makes. My situation is different. If you were in my shoes, if you had my life, if you had my problems, if you were married to my wife, you would also be using drugs. You would also be an addict. They don't get sober until they realize none of those, the cause for addiction. People, places, all the triggers, all the stuff that's happening around you, you don't have any control over that. But the good news is, it doesn't have any control over you. Not when you're locked into a higher power. So I think a lot of addiction is about creating fancier and more state-of-the-art environments and more expensive to justify that expense when we know what works. What works doesn't require a spa treatment. It doesn't require gourmet meals. You can do it right where you are, being exactly as it is right now.
