Transcript
Can a person become addicted to emotional chaos? Absolutely. Addiction is not a chemical dependency. That's a physical thing. And the most obvious proof of that is somebody who had a chemical dependency and they detoxified from it. And then even has years of sobriety. And then even though everything seems to be going perfectly fine in their life, they go back to the addiction. The underlying reason why an addict gravitates toward the addiction is for distraction. Distraction from the pain of existence. We're talking about sensitive souls who never really acclimate to their embodiment, to their embodiment, existence itself is very awkward. The addiction provides from that, even though it seems illogical, a person will actually go look for a distraction that's causing all types of damage and craziness in their life. But at least it takes their mind off of their existential pain. The solution, obviously, is to make peace with existence, to become in your own skin, to embrace the fact that you are a soul in a body, here in this world. And that making peace with existence is what we call a spiritual awakening, discovering essential meaning in the fact that you are a soul in a body here in this world.

Addiction has very little to do with drugs, alcohol, or any particular substance. At its core, addiction is an attempt to escape the pain of existence. Any distraction that is intense enough can serve that purpose. Emotional chaos is a common example. Some people become addicted to drama because it provides an escape every bit as effective as a chemical one. The goal, of course, is not to find a better escape but to make peace with existence itself. That comes through a spiritual awakening, which begins when a person stops trying to flee reality and learns instead to feel at home within it. #addiction #recovery #spiritualgrowth #overcomeaddciction #jewishwisdom
