Former Prime Minister Tony Blair released his famous essay about a month ago which made headlines in the news about basically all of the problems that the UK government is facing right now. But it's about 6,000 words. Loads of people still haven't read it yet, even though it's going to affect you. So here's my breakdown. First, Blair says that Labour's main problem isn't Starmer's personality or communication. It's the fact that they have caused Labour to stay in this soft left comfort zone because instead of identifying the problem, coming up with an idea to solve it and then executing on a plan, they just contest the personality contest. Then anything. After identifying that problem, Blair then focuses on these two global shifts that the UK government just isn't ready for. The geopolitical shift, where US, China and India are going to become the main, like two/three global powers, which makes us a middle power. And then the technological shift with AI, which will either make an economy or break an economy. Now that he's put the UK in a pretty bad position, he then prescribed a fix. It's called the radical centre. We put policy first. Second, much recent governments have done. He gives examples of Carney and Canada and Macron in France, showing that there is huge demand for centrist governments, but there's just a lack of good supply now. I agree with his takes on pro-business, adopting AI and reforming UK planning, but I agree less with his take on temporarily forgetting net zero because I don't like abandoning long-term plans. Hopefully that was helpful, but let me know if you agree or not.
