We've Made Raising our
Mini Aussie Puppy So Far...
Swipe to learn from our fumbling
Mistake 1
Too much freedom,
too early.
We introduced the couch quite soon and Zuri immediately connected it to unlimited fun. She thinks it's her personal playground instead of a chill zone, coming and going whenever she pleases. Try eating a dinner with a flying land shark in your face. We're actively teaching her to stay on place or under while we eat.
Mistake 2
Repetition or
rewarding at a
wrong time.
We did sometimes repeat commands over and over when she couldn't get it. Worse, we talked over each other during training sessions or gave treats while saying marker. All it did was dilute the words and leave Zuri confused or inconsistent. Say it once, reset, and stay consistent.
Mistake 3
Teaching fun tricks
over cooperative care
It's cute if your puppy can shake, rollover or peekaboo, but the real flex is cooperative grooming. We taught her the fun stuff early instead of prioritizing stronger handling boundaries. Paws, ears, teeth, and flipping on her back are vital—not just for stress-free vet visits, but for checking what she just illegally excavated from the sidewalk.
Mistake 4
Missing the post-nap
potty window.
The rule is simple: nap ends, puppy goes straight outside. Instead, Dad would get distracted by morning cuddles, play sessions, or forcing her to ring the potty bell first. The result? Completely avoidable indoor accidents. Speed is everything.
Mistake 5
Wrong reaction to
biting
Our absolute biggest struggle right now is biting. By swapping items too fast, we inadvertently bribed her or made the biting feel like keep-away. Current strategy is a firm "No," immediate disengagement, if she is still biting after this "warning", we create distance for 5 minutes. If she's just overtired, it's straight to the crate for a nap.
