to understand what a marketing director needs to do in their role and whether you're ready for that role then at the fact that marketing directors are generalist marketers. So we can look at marketers in two camps. There's generalist marketers who have like a solid understanding of all the foundations and strategies of marketing, understand their customers, understand buyer journeys, positioning strategy, all that stuff. And then you have specialist marketers who would deep dive into the execution of the elements within that need to be delivered. So this question here about marketing director to lack technical knowledge, I would love to know more from this person who commented. But typically I would say it doesn't concern me because when the marketing is set up properly, you actually shouldn't have a marketing director who has a deep knowledge on search terms for an SEO campaign or exactly how targeting should work within an ad because that is a waste of their time. They should be sitting at board level orchestrating, directing a team and hiring agency specialists because a really common misconception about the higher up you get in marketing is that you then like get deeper knowledge, you learn more, but actually you move further away from the execution pieces. So it would concern me if there was a marketing director who wasn't touching on those things at all. Um, like say, for example, it was a necessary part of a strategy, but they're like, oh, I don't have any experience of that. So I'm not doing that. And a good marketing director will assess the environment, will be like, okay, we need to achieve this. These are gonna be the best ways for us to achieve that and these are the tools and strategies we're gonna use. And then here's what my team's gonna do. Here is what the agencies I'm hiring are gonna do and it's all gonna pull together into like execute in this plan for results. Um, I actually get a bit um uncomfortable when people who are in more senior positions, if I'm coaching them on their marketing strategies, like what I do inside B2B break through academy, a lot of my students who are building their strategies well, if they start talking to me about deeply specialist things, I'm thinking where is your head at? Like you're very like granular here. You need to step up a level and be talking about the overall picture. Um, so in a nutshell, I don't believe marketers at the level of marketing director should have technical knowledge, though they should have broad strategic knowledge. It goes back to people thinking that marketers should be able to do everything. Are building out CRMs, it's ridiculous. Like a marketing manager should be running the show and the but that's what the budget is for is to hire the specialist to get the job done.
