we don't really do palette cleansers on this page. I mean we're reading a lot of Penguin Classics. Like how much of a palette cleanser can you get? Come on. Scouts honor you will never see a book that would look like it's sitting on a Target endcap on this page. I can assure you. I just finished Vanity Fair and I needed a so-called palette cleanser. So here are my Penguin Classics palette cleansers. Get ready, they are all scary short stories. Starting off strong with The Best of Richard Matheson. He wrote a lot of Twilight Zone episodes and if you want to feel nostalgia and also the creepiness of the Twilight Zone episodes, this is a great one. You will recognize some of the stories in here. I'm not going to lie, I hate this cover. Like I hate it and I love it. It's creepy as shit. Songs of a Dead Dreamer and Grimscribe by Thomas Ligotti. I'm going to be so for real, I never heard of this guy. But Penguin Amazon suggested it to me after I'd been ordering all these and I Kafkaesque influenced by Lovecraft and Poe. Immediately yes. Hey, what you want about him, but H.P. Lovecraft could write some horror. This short story compilation is called The Thing on the Doorstep and Other Weird Stories. Immediately sold just by the title. Weird stories, count me in. I love this cover. I don't know how to say his first name. Algernon Blackwood. I've heard of him before. Ancient Sorceries and Other Weird Stories. Anything with weird in the title and I'm sold. Weird stories, give it to me. I've read a couple of his short stories and they are creepy, they are very elevated, and apparently he was very interested in the occult. This one, I'm so excited to read. A Chance to Dream. Yes, that's the title of this one and it's by Charles Beaumont. He was a contemporary of Richard Matheson. He was actually friends with him. The introduction is by Ray Bradbury and he was also a contemporary and a friend of his. This guy died when he was only 38. Early onset Alzheimer's, so sad, creepy as shit. And you're going to love it. He also had a lot of episodes on the Twilight Zone. You will love this if you love the Twilight Zone. I need more Penguin's short stories. Like I need, but the scary ones. Scary only. Let me know in the comments your favorite. Stay spicy.
