SpaceX's shopping spree has begun. I told you it was coming. They just went public, bought Cursor for $60 billion, and now they're rolling around the economy like it's Costco and they got one of those mega carts. And the latest thing they're putting in their cart is a company that I've talked about a few months ago. It's called Mesh Optical Technologies, and SpaceX just got the green light from the FTC to go buy them. Now Mesh, they build these optical receivers which move data over light instead of traditional copper wires, so data moves faster and with way less power. And here's why SpaceX actually wants them, because Mesh was founded by former SpaceX engineers that actually built the laser links that help to connect all the Starlinks that are out in orbit right now. And now that same technology is one of the missing links in SpaceX's next big bet, Starmind. Now Starmind is their bet to put AI data centers in orbit with up to a million solar powered satellites. Think of Starlink as the pipes and a Starmind satellite is sort of like the server. And to make these swarm of servers work in orbit, they're going to need ultrafast optical data links connecting them, and that's exactly what Mesh builds. But here's something about this announcement that's pretty fascinating. Again, these founders were ex-SpaceX engineers, and then they left, they built the technology SpaceX needs, and SpaceX has to go and buy them back. So founders spin out, build the thing maybe that their old employer wasn't really focused on, and now they get bought back by that same employer. The question I have is have we seen this before? We actually have, and if you look back, Cisco actually turned this into a playbook. They even called it the spin-in. Like there was a team of ex-Cisco engineers that went and did this three separate times. Spin out, bought back in every single time. I guess that's how slow giants end up being able to move fast like a startup. So I think we should really be watching this pattern. SpaceX now ran that play, and between Starmind, Terafab chip factory with Tesla, and everything else Musk is now stitching together, I doubt this will be the last. That shopping cart is not full yet.
