22 year old learns financial literacy: opening a Roth IRA. Because I made a mistake when I was 20 years old and maxing it out every single year since. This summer I told the internet I have a goal of being more financially literate, and I'm sharing everything because we don't get keep around here and no one taught me this as the oldest. So a Roth IRA is a retirement account that does not get taxed when you withdraw the money once you retire. Every year you can max it out to a certain number, I believe it's like 7,000 right now. That money just sits in the account and it gets invested into stocks, bonds, etc. The longer you leave it in there, the more it grows. The earlier you start investing, the more it compounds. After talking to a bunch of people and doing my research, I've determined that Fidelity is the best platform, at least for me. Now Fidelity gives me two options, either manage my own money in stocks or have Fidelity just decide what to put my money into. Just to stay on the safe side and not get into anything haram, I'm going to choose my own individual stocks. Guys, my biggest pet peeve is filling out my ethnic demographic and there being no North African option. And I'm not even joking when I say this took me two minutes to set up, so I'm going to open my account now. I've been putting off opening a Roth IRA for months because not opening one felt easier than admitting I have no idea what I'm doing. Because no one ever talks about how hard it is to even start as someone who doesn't have a lot of people to ask about this topic. And now that I actually did it, I realize how easy it is, but so much of our stress just comes from not starting in the first place. Fidelity literally took me two minutes. I officially have a Roth IRA. I hope if you watch this video and you don't have one that you go open one right now. Because the internet literally exists, like there are so many tools that are at disposal. I'll see you soon.
