Follow @OddsOnTechnology for more technology history and forgotten internet stories. Before Google, YouTube, GameFAQs, and Reddit, getting stuck in The Legend of Zelda meant picking up your landline and calling Nintendo. In 1987, Nintendo launched its Game Counselor Hotline, where trained gaming experts answered thousands of calls from players who couldn’t solve puzzles, find hidden dungeons, or defeat difficult bosses. The counselors had maps, strategy guides, developer notes, and years of game knowledge, becoming the original walkthrough before the internet ever existed. For an entire generation of NES players, this wasn’t just customer support. It was the closest thing to Google Search. Long before online guides, Nintendo had real people helping gamers save Hyrule one phone call at a time. #nintendo #zelda #ai #game #gaming
