Nvidia scientists compare CPU vs GPU computing

Back in 2008, NVIDIA teamed up with MythBusters to demonstrate the difference between a CPU and a GPU using thousands of paintballs. One machine fired a single paintball at a time to slowly create an image, representing how a CPU processes tasks sequentially. The other unleashed 1,100 paintballs simultaneously, creating the Mona Lisa in just 80 milliseconds to demonstrate parallel computing. It wasn’t just a clever stage demo. It was a glimpse into the architecture that would eventually power modern artificial intelligence. At the time, most people associated GPUs with better graphics in PC gaming. Few realized those same chips would go on to train large language models, accelerate machine learning, run CUDA, power supercomputers, and become the backbone of ChatGPT, OpenAI, Google Gemini, Claude, Midjourney, self driving cars, scientific simulations, and countless AI applications.
