Every advanced chip made in the last few years, your Mac, iPhone, AI GPU was printed on a machine built by one Dutch company, ASML. Their newest machine costs around $380 million and nothing else on earth can do what it does. So what does it do? Inside the machine, molten tin droplets fall through a vacuum chamber at 50,000 droplets per second. Each one gets hit by a CO2 laser twice. The first pulse flattens the droplet into a pancake. The second pulse explodes the pancake into plasma at ~500,000 degrees C. And the plasma emits EUV light at 13.5nm, the exact wavelength you need to print modern transistors. That light bounces off mirrors so precise, if scaled to the size of Germany, no bump taller than 1 mm. Regular glass doesn't work at 13.5 nanometers because EUV gets absorbed by basically everything including air. So it needs to run in a hard vacuum. The reason your phone has billions of transistors is because this company in the Netherlands figured out how to vaporize tin with lasers 50,000 times per second when most people have never even heard of them.
