Hi everyone, so you might have seen in the news a few weeks ago that the HPV vaccine has been linked to an incredible milestone. So let's break down why this is so important. A UK study found that girls vaccinated against HPV at age 12 to 13 had an almost zero risk of dying from cervical cancer before the age of thirty. Now, even more remarkably, between 2020 and 2024, there were no recorded cervical cancer deaths in women aged 20 to 24 in England and this is the first time that's ever happened. So without vaccination, researchers estimate around 23 deaths would have been expected in that period. This works because HPV causes around 99% of cervical cancers. The vaccine prevents infection with the high-risk strains of the virus, stopping the chain of events that can eventually lead to cancer years later. So since the vaccination program began in 2008, it's estimated that around 200 lives have already been saved in England alone. This is such a landmark for medicine, it's rare that we can say a single vaccine doesn't just help prevent an infection, it helps prevent a cancer and there's now evidence that it's saving lives and that's why these findings are such a major milestone for both vaccinations and preventative medicine.
