Why do shots to the liver shut down your body and why does it sometimes take a while for it to kick in? It's not just normal pain like getting hit anywhere else on your body. This is your liver on the right side, so left hooks to the body target it. And it's right next to your vagus nerve which goes straight from your gut to your brain stem. So when you get hit in the liver, it tugs on this nerve causing a vasovagal response. Your blood pressure crashes which means even your brain doesn't get enough blood and your legs can even disappear underneath you involuntarily just like getting rocked normally. Your whole entire body shuts down and the delay is from the signal traveling up to your brain and then throughout your circulatory system.
