The EU just passed a temporary extension on chat control where now American companies are going to be able to voluntarily scan everyone's messages. The EU has been voting and debating on the topic of chat control for years. The public is aggressively against it. And there's two types. Chat control 1.0, which was established in I believe 2021, and then chat control 2.0, which is much more aggressive and much more invasive on the general public. The main difference between 1.0 and 2.0 is in 1.0 it's only voluntary that these companies can scan your private messages and it excludes end-to-end encrypted messaging systems. But in 2.0 all of that goes away. It's part of the core system and they want to break end-to-end encryptions and just scan everyone's personal messages. Emails, DMs, text messages, Xbox messages, everything. Anything you could possibly think of that is a form of communication, they want access to scan it. The crazy thing about EU politics is chat control 2.0 was brought into parliament and voted on five different times and five different times it failed, which is the recent failure. And the political party that is pushing the surveillance system chose an emergency tactical maneuver where they said, all right, let's extend chat control 1.0 for now and we can revisit 2.0 in 2028. And so, because they chose to extend a previous bill and not amend it or introduce an entirely new one, those opposing the bill needed to hit a specific threshold to successfully block it. And now, despite those opposing it getting significantly more votes than those supporting it, because it didn't hit the threshold, it successfully went through. So even though the majority of the people don't want this bill and don't want their private messages scanned, it doesn't matter because they chose to extend it rather than introduce a new bill. I should also add the reason why they want to scan everyone's private messages is because they want to protect the kids from adults who are sharing CSAM or trying to acquire CSAM online through these messages. As of right now, chat control 1.0 has gone through. It is only temporary until 2028, and between now and then, the EU parliament will be discussing whether to create a permanent version of it, which would most likely be a chat control 2.0, or to do what they did previously where it expired and then they have to figure something else out.
