I'm going to be honest, I think the internet that we understand it as is going to cease to exist in the relative to near future and someone's going to either have to make an internet 2 or we just have to go back to the printing press. Because between KOSA, the Screen Act, and now the Blockbeard Act and the Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act, it doesn't feel good. We are watching in real time the effects of KOSA and the Screen Act in the EU and the UK with their own version, the Online Safety Act, as it was posed as a way to protect the kids and then a week later they were already discussing ending encryption so they can scan your private messages and send them to police whenever they want. Children need limits on social media, I believe that and I believe that it's harmful to their psyche and their general growth, but there's also a reason why the YouTube Kids app was thrown to the side. Now add on top of that that the US is also trying to add now the Blockbeard Act and the Foreign Anti-Digital Piracy Act. These two other bills are trying to force ISPs to block all foreign pirate sites. First off, if buying is not owning then pirating is not stealing. Second, these methods are known to be extremely ineffective at blocking piracy and they will cause issues for other websites that are sharing the same IP or cloud infrastructure. And third, over a decade ago there were internet blackouts protesting this exact thing. I'm so tired of dealing with geriatric politicians who are in support of things like this, meanwhile they can't even give you the most basic description of what Wi-Fi is or how it works. This is lobbying, it's lobbying or it's an extremely uneducated decision on something because they used AI to summarize it. Now, these bills and ones like it have been brought up in the past and shut down. Also, we have free speech which differentiates us from the tea drinkers across the way, but with the growing power of Palantir, major companies capitulating towards Trump and the centre to right leaning politics that some Democrats continue to lean on, it doesn't bring me the vision of the brightest days ahead. That being said, I will continue to hope and focus on hope and work towards following those who are fighting back, but I do find it a bit worrisome.
