Breaking news out of Houston. ICE agents were looking for two other people when they encountered Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican construction worker, husband, and father of three who had lived in the United States for more than 30 years. According to reports, Lorenzo was driving his brother and two workers to a construction job when ICE agents in unmarked vehicles attempted to stop his van. He was not the person ICE originally came to arrest. What happened next is sharply disputed. The Department of Homeland Security says Lorenzo rammed a federal vehicle, ignored commands, and tried to use his van as a weapon against an ICE officer. DHS says the officer fired in self-defense. But the three men inside the van tell a different story through their attorney. They say no officer was standing directly in front of the van or in its path, and that the shots came from the side, including through the passenger-side window. Lorenzo was shot in the abdomen and later died at the hospital. The ICE agents were not wearing body cameras. Their vehicles reportedly did not have dashboard cameras. As of now, no public video shows the shooting itself. This case raises serious questions: Was the original vehicle stop legal? Can ICE arrest someone who was never the target of the operation? Was the officer facing an imminent threat when he fired? Why were the agents conducting an armed operation without body cameras? What physical evidence will determine which version is accurate? Could Lorenzo’s family sue ICE or the federal government? And is this one isolated tragedy, or part of a larger pattern as ICE arrests and vehicle-based enforcement operations surge across the country?
