A major change has taken effect for international students. Beginning September 15, many F-1 students, J-1 exchange visitors, and I visa foreign media representatives are no longer admitted for duration of status. Instead, your I-94 expiration date now determines how long you may remain in the United States. If you need additional time, you may have to file an extension with USCIS before your I-94 expires. Your school's extension of your I-20 or DS-2019 alone may no longer be enough to maintain lawful status. The new rules also affect grace periods, school transfers, and certain program changes.
