If you are a highly ambitious person who doesn't know what you want to do with your life, here are three books you should read this summer that helped me when I was quitting banking and I had no idea what to do with my life or career. These are not the typical recs you are going to get from googling this problem because you've probably already read a few of those. Third on the list is Tiny Experiments: How to Live Freely in a Goal-Obsessed World by Anne-Laure Le Cunff. The reason you are in a pickle is because you are trying to find the one thing that you are destined to do and be 100% sure that it will work out. This book will help you throw that mindset out the window because it's all about developing an experimental mindset towards life. The author herself quit googled entrepreneurship to get a PhD in neuroscience so the way she does this is both personal and tactical. The second one is A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles. It's fiction, it's one of my favorite books that I have ever read and it is profoundly moving. It's about a Russian count who gets sentenced to permanent house arrest in the 1920s and his journey to rediscovering meaning in life. I am recommending this book because you probably don't need another how to. You need perspective from your own problems in a beautifully written messy story. And number one on the list is So Good They Can't Ignore You by Cal Newport. I recently reread this and I love it because it turns some of the worst yet most common career advice on its head. It essentially says that following your passion is the worst way to build a career and that you should instead develop a craftsman mindset. This is incredibly liberating because so much of the stuckness that I felt as an ambitious person in my 20s was because I didn't feel passionate about anything. So put these on your reading list and follow me if you're building an ambitious nonlinear career.
