There's something they're not telling you about the new cyclospora outbreak. I've seen a lot of articles about this new explosive diarrhea parasite. And the PR is saying what to know about it. USA TODAY is talking about how it's changing restaurant menus. The New York Times is telling you how to stay safe from it. And NBC News is talking about the number of hospitalized cases. But there's one thing that every single one of these articles is not doing and that's putting the outbreak in context. Because if you were putting the outbreak in context, you would have to say that last summer, a program of the CDC quietly stopped tracking six different pathogens, including cyclospora. Monitoring for the six pathogens is no longer required for the 10 states that participate in the program, though those states aren't precluded from conducting surveillance on their own. Dr. J. Glenn Morris, the director of the Emerging Pathogens Institute at the University of Florida, said, "Essentially, CDC is backing off on one of their best surveillance systems." This program that monitored for the six pathogens was the only surveillance system that actively looks for multiple foodborne diseases at the federal level, according to food safety experts. And why did they stop tracking all these pathogens that has now led to this serious outbreak? It was deja vu from 2025: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this week announced more than $600 million in cuts to public health grants in California, Illinois, Colorado and Minnesota - four Democratic-led states. And I honestly think it's really irresponsible reporting for these news outlets to not scream from the rooftops that the reason we're having a cyclospora outbreak is because the CDC is underfunded and they had to limit the pathogens that FoodNet was tracking because of Trump's budget cuts. It always goes back to who has the money and what is that money being allocated for? My brother in Christ, everything is political. Everything is political. Because things are actually fucking political. If the Trump administration hadn't cut $600 million from the CDC's budget, we could actually track the things that make Americans sick.
