So a few weeks back, Konami invited me to Paris to play three hours of the new Castlevania game. And now it is hands down my most anticipated video game of the year. This is Castlevania: Belmont's Curse. The first mainline Castlevania game in over 12 years. After only a few minutes of game time, I realized just how much we've been missing this series. It is the gold standard for 2D world design and gameplay. The environments here are truly some of the most beautiful I've ever seen in a 2D game. 15th century is brought to life in such a disturbingly gorgeous way. And the game's use of color to depict the different areas of the map like genius game design and signposting. Gameplay wise, I was incredibly impressed by how robust Rose Belmont's the game's arsenal was. The game's priority seems to be to give the player creative freedom and expression as possible. And by the time you've gathered Rose's whip, various weapons, arcanas, etc. Combat becomes this satisfying dance of like reactive improv and intentional combos and parries and dodges. Also got this clue system leading up to each boss fight. Where you'll explore and gather intel on the upcoming boss. I wasn't too about this until I was fighting the third boss with like very little success. In the middle of maybe my fifth attempt, one of the clues I had found earlier suddenly popped into my mind, and all of a sudden the entire boss fight just clicked for me. Like the next attempt using this revelation. It was just a satisfying moment that rewarded my exploration and it felt so good. Wait for this. The three hours wasn't even close to enough for me. Castlevania: Belmont's Curse launches on October 15th on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series consoles. Thank you to Konami to Paris and for sponsoring this video.
