Amazon Leo has just beaten Starlink to South Africa. This is not a drill. The tech giant has announced its low earth orbit satellite internet service called Amazon Leo, will launch in South Africa in 2027 through a partnership with Herotel. Now together, they'll launch a new service called Evry, bringing high speed internet to places beyond the reach of fibre and mobile networks. As a result of this partnership, South Africa will become one of Amazon Leo's first commercial markets. So here's the interesting part. Starlink has spent years stuck in this standoff over South African ownership rules. Amazon looked at the challenge and took a slightly different approach. Instead of applying for its own license, it partnered with Herotel, which will hold the licenses needed to operate this service locally. So while Starlink has been waiting at the front door, Amazon has somewhat snuck in a side entrance. So if this rollout lives up to expectations, the impact could be enormous. I mean, think about it.
