Have you heard about this South African store? It's called Skubu. It's been getting a lot of attention lately. It's called Skubu. Yaa Skoob. Instead of buying groceries in set quantities, customers use dispensers to buy as much they need. What you get for R240 at SKÜBU. They simply bring a container and fill it up with maize meal, rice, flour, cooking oil, even washing powder and cleaning liquids. Each product has its own price per kilo or litre. 12.5 KG MAIZE MEAL. The price doesn't change depending on how much you buy. Now the idea came from founder Eben De Jongh, a former Unilever factory manager, and it revolves around this idea of "poverty tax." Essentially, you shopper can afford the big bulk pack, while another might only be able to afford the smallest one, which often become more expensive per kilogram because you're still paying for other fixed costs. So after spending four years developing Skubu, de Jongh now plans to scale its stores from its three locations in Joburg to more than 30 across Southern Africa, and you can see why this. I mean, there doesn't appear to be any other businesses doing automated grocery refills like this at scale. But if Skubu can expand, you'd expect other competitors to follow pretty quickly, and with it, the way that a lot more South Africans shop.
