A lot of autistic people experience this strange paradox where we're highly articulate, but the moment that we get overwhelmed or tired, we start quoting movie lines. And this has to do with how autistic brains process language. Neurotypical people are often analytic language processors, which means that they learn language by breaking it down into individual words and then building up sentences, kind of like Legos. But a large percent of autistic people are actually gestalt language processors, which means that we process language in chunks of words. So our brains don't just, like, memorise the word happy. Instead, we'll memorise, like, a movie line or a song lyric or a phrase that we heard when we felt that emotion, and then we will start breaking down and isolating individual words from that line to use individually. And when our brains are full of energy, we can quickly slice up our gestalts to sound like normal analytic speakers. But slicing up that data takes quite a bit of energy. So the moment that we get overwhelmed or our senses are overloaded, our brain will stop slicing up those gestalts and we'll either go mute, or we can only communicate through, like, raw, uncut movie lines or TikTok sounds or phrases we've heard throughout our life that have the same emotional significance to what we're currently feeling. And to someone whose brain doesn't work like this, it can kind of come off maybe like childish or weird, but basically Our brains are just running low on energy. And we don't have the power to build custom sentences anymore. So we rely on little pre saved audio bites that we have to communicate.
