When a neurotypical person asks you why you did something, they usually don't actually wanna know why. This is why a lot of the times when we go to explain exactly why we did something, we end up being told that we're, like, making excuses. They don't wanna hear the little details about why you did something. They just want reassurance that you care about the impact of your actions. For example, if someone asks why you didn't finish a chore, you might naturally respond with something like, well, I didn't do this because the washing machine was too loud, and then you turned the T.V. on. And I couldn't focus. And to a detail oriented autistic mind, you're explaining the facts and mapping out your environment for them so that they can understand. But neurotypical people sometimes don't really care about that, and they interpret that as you either blaming the washing machine or blaming them for turning the T.V. On. They're often just looking for accountability for your actions. So a response that's more like, my bad, I messed up. I should have done that, I'll do it right now, that's kind of like what they're looking for. And sometimes it's okay to throw in, you know, the literal why, of why you did it, but they don't really want all the details. So just something like, I got distracted by the noise. For some reason they can sometimes interpret those little tiny details that we think is important to explain, as relinquishing accountability for what we did.
