So it turns out that older this gold plated contacts, all started turning Apple then later replaced with more durable silver plated ones. Apple themselves have never officially confirmed why exactly this happens, but after thousands of electrical engineers that seem to it's a combination of things, including tiny electrical arcs, tear, and corrosion. But after thousands the metal protective coating can start to wear down.
