New to Wonder Woman? AVOID these books!

Getting into reading Wonder Woman can seem really confusing, especially when the books readily available on the shelf are not the best. So I am here to make the journey of reading Wonder Woman easier for you. I'm Wendy and I'm a massive Wonder Woman fan and I have read every single Wonder Woman book and I want you to become this character the way I have. And I want you to stick with reading this character. So hopefully you will find this video helpful in starting your Wonder Woman reading journey. When it comes to buying Wonder Woman comics, there will be three books you will commonly see on the shelf and they should all be avoided in my opinion. And why exactly is that? First of all, we have the two compact comic books for Wonder Woman. Both of these comic books are not great starting points for this character. And let me explain why. Wonder Woman: Earth One by Grant Morrison, Vance. Vance Paquette was the first compact comic book released. This is an Elseworld story and it is kind of an homage or a deconstruction or reimagining almost of the golden age or Marston era of Wonder Woman. However, it is terribly done and quite insulting and overall is a horrible depiction of the Amazons, Diana and the Amazons. Overall not a great book. If you're familiar with the character, there are things you can find in here that are quite enjoyable, Easter eggs and really pretty. But ultimately a pretty bad place for beginners to start about Diana or the Amazons. Next we have Wonder Woman: Blood and Guts by Brian Azzarello, Cliff Chiang and Tony Atkins. So Wonder Woman: Blood and Guts is the first 12 issues of the new 52 from 2011 and it's the two first collected editions being Blood and Guts. So what exactly is so problematic about this run? Diana's origin was changed from the clay origin to the daughter of Zeus and this ultimately affected Cassie Sandsmark. The Amazons were also changed, which was very, very bad for them. This book is very much viewed through the eyes of a male lens and it comes with a lot of hype and aura moments, but the supporting cast does overshadow Diana, you again don't learn much about her characterization is somewhat, it's okay, but it's still not the best. We don't learn that much about her, but ultimately this has been retconned. This is the main one you're going to see stocked everywhere. The current mainline Wonder Woman run starting from 2023 written by Tom King, the artist is Daniel Sampere. This run is incredibly controversial from start to finish. First of all, Outlaw is told through the eyes of the villain for a very long time. I believe it's 19 issues if I remember correctly. Aw. Nothing about Diana or Wonder Woman in fact, she is written so out of character. It's really quite sad. This whole book here and the books that come after it in this run are simply telling a story not about Diana. They don't push her character forwards or anything. It simply features a character named Diana or Wonder Woman. It's quite a shame because there are ideas that could work, but ultimately it falls flat. And for beginners, it is a rough place to start because you will learn nothing. You will learn more about the supporting cast members about the actual main character. And I think that is a huge problem. So hopefully you have found this helpful in telling you what books not to read or to purchase for your next video. I'll be going through the books that I highly recommend you start with. That way you will stick with the character and love the character because she has some absolutely incredible books.
