Here's exactly how I'd live off of $2 million in retirement without ever running out of money. And spoiler alert it goes against everything you've ever been taught. I'm Tyler. I'm a former financial advisor and portfolio manager. Now I make financial content for free so you don't have to pay for it. Number one: I invest 90% in a total market fund like Vanguard's VTI and 10% in a money market fund like Fidelity's SPAXX. It's good enough for Buffett's estate plan. It's good enough for Ty-Ty. No. 2. I then ignore the 4% rule entirely as it's fear based nonsense. The average million dollar portfolio withdrawn at 4% over 30 years grows to nearly $10 million with 100% stock allocation. You're literally dying rich to avoid dying broke. No. 3. So I'd start with 6% withdrawals, about 100k a year, enough to fund a new Filson vest and still be projected to die with $2.6 million. No. 4. Then after five years, I'd bump withdrawals to 7%, roughly $175k a year. So now I can afford to spend the harsh Vermont winters in Arizona. No. 5. But even at 7%, I'd still be projected to die with $2 million. And knowing that I only have 8 to 10 years left to kick it, I'd crank it to $200,000 a year to fund my one and only "Tyler Gardner high stakes bingo circuit." Invite only.
