Turns Out You Can Trick an Oyster into Making a Pearl on Purpose It’s true! One way pearls are made/reproduced is through a process called ‘pearl culturing’ where the farmer gently opens the shell and inserts a small round bead. This makes the animal inside the shell think something harmful has entered the body. To defend itself, it begins covering the bead with a shiny material called ‘nacre,’ where the animal inside then slowly adds thousands of thin nacre layers around the bead until a smooth pearl forms! So, pearls don’t just grow once - they can be reproduced! How awesome is that? So awesome that I turned it into a longform video for you! So please enjoy!
