We don't just tell them to jump in head first. We teach it in a progression. First, we review streamline position. You've heard me before, but your hands should be stacked one on top of the other with your arms squeezing just behind your ears. Then we start with a seated dive. Sit on the edge of the pool and think the water in this order: hands, head, shoulders, knees, and toes. Yes, kind of like the song. Once you've got that, move to a kneeling dive. Put one knee down, curl the toes over the edge and keep the toes of your back foot on the ground behind you. As you dive, think hands, head, shoulders, knees, and toes. And don't forget to push off with your back foot. Finally, progress to a standing dive. Stand with your toes curled over the edge, bend down like you're gonna and simply slide into the water in your streamline. As you get more comfortable, add a small hop before entering the water. If you're belly flopping, there's a good chance you're lifting your head. Instead, tuck your chin slightly toward your chest, where your head goes, your body follows.
