Most people assume disabled people have one mobility aid that does everything. But that’s just not how it works. Disability isn’t one-size-fits-all. I get asked for recommendations for aids that tick ALL of the boxes, but that just doesn't exist! You might use a stick which is easy to grab and great for short distances around the house on better days. Not all homes are accessible, so lightweight walkers like this one can sometimes be the only way to get around on rough days. The alternative? Crawl. The Rollz Motion 2-in-1 is a walker/ wheelchair, was my perfect aid for a while. These days I need more support, so it’s better for travelling or sunny holidays rather than everyday use. I use my manual chair for everyday activities like popping to the shop. It’s light, easy to transport, & manoeuvres in tight spaces but it relies on having the upper body strength to push myself, or someone to push me. My Whill C2 powerchair is best for big days out & long distances. It gives me the support & independence I need, and it’s ideal for days when I can’t self-propel. For outdoor adventures like walking the dog, I use the Scoozy. It works on all terrains better than anything else but you can’t fit it in a car. Here’s the thing: the “perfect” mobility aid doesn’t exist. We usually have to make compromises. Getting the right aids isn’t quick, it isn’t easy, and it’s really expensive. Most of us never get everything we’d need to enjoy everything we want to do. Mobility aids aren’t luxuries they’re how we live our lives. If you’ve ever been questioned for switching aids, I’d love to hear your story in the comments. And if you learned something new, please share that too.
