I graduated in 2019 with a Procurement degree and immediately went hunting for a job. Unfortunately, so were hundreds of thousands of others. The jobs never came. So my mind went to the obvious next step. A master's degree. And not just anywhere. I decided I needed one from abroad. I applied and got an offer letter from the University of Hertfordshire in the UK. I was thrilled. In my head, doors were finally opening. I would return to Kenya announcing a master's from the United Kingdom and better jobs would follow. I was completely mistaken. My visa did not go through. And when I looked at the actual numbers, the fees alone would have been over 1.9 million shillings across two years. Today that same path is closer to 3 million. Nearly 3 million shillings to chase a promise. And this thinking is everywhere. We believe going abroad solves unemployment. But you forget you are entering economies that already have their own graduates competing for those same jobs. We have convinced ourselves that good education only exists outside our country. So I made a different decision. I stayed and asked what could actually pay me here. I was running a cyber cafe at the time, and I noticed something. Kenyan businesses badly needed proper graphic designers and web designers. So I focused there. Then I added content creation, talking on TikTok about the work I was doing. Look at where that led. My total investment was about 200,000 shillings. Roughly 100,000 to open the cyber cafe in Nairobi, and another 100,000 for laptops and ring lights. That is what built everything. Go abroad if you genuinely want to. I am not against it. But look around you first. The problems here are already paying people. Solve one. — Elvis W.
