A look at how the UK social media ban for under 16s could impact so called ‘kidfluencers’. Ruby Hughes, 15, with the support of her mum Emma, has become hugely popular with her peers by sharing make up tips and tutorials on apps like TikTok. But campaigners say no matter how involved parents are, the addictive nature of social media means it’s not the place for young content creators. A DSIT spokesperson said: “For too long, social media companies have failed to protect children, which is why we’re acting, following one of the largest consultations of its kind. Nine in ten parents who responded to the government’s consultation supported a minimum age of 16 for social media - a clear mandate for action. This is not about taking the internet away from children. We want children to use technology to learn, study and develop, while spending less time exposed to the harmful and persuasive design features that too often dominate their lives.” #kidfluencer #socialmediaban
