Dallas has a housing crisis

Dallas has a housing crisis. Dallas has a serious housing issue. Let's talk about it. For context, I grew up in DFW. I lived on the East Coast for five years, moved back and this is my third year apartment hunting. And what I've seen in those three years regarding the apartment prices here in Dallas is diabolical. I haven't received my letter of lease renewal for the apartment that I live in right now, but I did check the website and the unit and square footage that I have right now now goes for 500 dollars more than what I'm paying for my current lease. The thing is, we live in Dallas, Texas. Not San Francisco, New York, Boston, whatever. We're in Dallas, Texas. There is genuinely no reason a studio apartment that's 700 square feet give or take should cost 1900 dollars. That is insane. And it's not even in a bougie area of town. It's literally East Dallas. This year we're exploring two bedroom apartments because I'm moving in with my boyfriend and it's hard to even find a two bedroom apartment under 3500. That like looks decent. Is near a green area so we can walk a dog. We've even explored buildings in the Turtle Creek area where on the outside the facade looks really bougie and the leasing office looks bougie and then you go into the units, nothing to write home about, very tight. And then like, yeah, this one's like 3300. What? Explain to me how people in New York that I know who live in Brooklyn are paying like 2 grand a piece, might they have a roommate, but they live in Brooklyn, New York, not Dallas. And then like I keep seeing these complexes pop up, they're being built, you know, one was just like built by the Katy Trail. And it's like, yeah, this area is nice, but then you look up what a one bed there costs, and I think it was like 2600. That was months ago when I looked, I'm sure it's more now. The only apartment complexes that are being built are clearly for very affluent people. And I'm like, okay, for those who work in the city and want to live close by, where are we supposed to go? Genuine question. And then like I keep seeing these complexes pop up, they're being built, you know, one was just like built by the Katy Trail.
