1. STOP TRYING TO SAVE THE OLD VERSION OF YOUR FAMILY This is going to hurt. You may spend months trying to get back to “how things used to be.” The old house. The old routine. The old relationship. The old version of your family. But you can’t heal while constantly trying to resurrect something that no longer exists. Grieve what was. Don’t pretend it didn’t matter. Don’t pretend you don’t miss it. But understand that healing may require you to build a new version of your family, not recreate the old one. Your family can change without your love for your children changing. ⸻ 2. SEPARATE YOUR HEARTBREAK FROM YOUR PARENTING Your relationship ended. Your responsibility as a parent didn’t. Your children shouldn’t have to become your therapist, messenger, spy, or emotional support system. Don’t make them choose sides. Don’t make them carry information they aren’t emotionally equipped to carry. And don’t let your anger toward their other parent become the lens through which your children see them. You can be devastated. You can be angry. You can believe the relationship ended unfairly. And still protect your children from the war inside your heart. That’s strength. ⸻ 3. STOP WAITING FOR THEIR DECISION TO DETERMINE YOUR FUTURE This may be the hardest one. You may still be hoping they’ll come back. Hoping they’ll realize what they lost. Hoping they’ll change. Hoping the family gets put back together. You can hope. But don’t put your life on hold. Start rebuilding yourself while you’re still grieving. Strengthen your relationship with God. Take care of your body. Get your finances right. Reconnect with yourself. Become emotionally healthier. Learn from what happened. Take accountability for your part. And start building a life that your children can be proud to watch you live. Because one day, you may look back and realize: The relationship ended. The family changed. But you didn’t have to lose yourself too. And maybe that’s what healing really is. Not pretending the breakup didn’t destroy the future you imagined. But accepting that the future you imagined isn’t the only future God can give you. You can grieve what you lost… while still becoming someone you’re proud of. Your family may look different now. But your children can still have a parent who shows them what it looks like to hurt without becoming bitter, to take accountability without destroying yourself, and to love without losing yourself. Don’t spend the rest of your life trying to put yesterday back together. Build something your children can feel safe in tomorrow.
