When they ask why you're leaving your current job, don't make these mistakes when you're in a job interview. And they ask why you're leaving your current job, it's quite easy to mess it up because most people tend to do one of two things. They either start moaning about the company, the boss, the company, the culture, or how they've been treated. Or they give like a really vague answer. I'm just looking for a new challenge. And neither is really helpful because when I'm asking somebody why they're looking to leave, what I'm actually trying to understand is why you're sitting in front of me. Are you running away from something? Is there a problem you're potentially gonna bring with you? And probably most importantly, are you actually serious about leaving? Because I don't wanna spend the next two or three weeks interviewing you, you offer you the job and then you tell me, ah, my current company has offered me another 10 grand. So even if your boss is useless and the company is an absolute shit show, you don't need to spend five minutes telling me about it. You can say something like, I've learned loads where I am and I've done some really good stuff, but realistically, I've reached a point where there isn't much room for me to progress. Or the role has changed quite a bit since I joined and it's not really taking me in the direction I want my career to go. And then you tell them what you're actually looking for. I thought about this and for a while and I've decided I want to move into X. That's one of the reasons this role interested me. Now I know actually that you thought about why you're leaving. You're not just pissed off with your boss and you're not randomly seeing what's out there. And hopefully, you're considerably less likely to waste everybody's time and accept the counter offer when we offer you the job. You don't need to lie about why you're leaving. You just need to explain it without making me worry about hiring you. For more no nonsense job search advice, hit the follow button. Cheers.
