do you know why young people can't get jobs? It's because the jobs that young people typically do don't really exist anymore. 20 odd years ago when I was at college and I was at uni, I worked in a supermarket. That supermarket employed hundreds of students, part-time work, the Saturday job, the evening work. That same supermarket now, all self-service checkouts. And it's the same everywhere, all of the shops in the high street that most young people would get their first job in, all boarded up. The Saturday job doesn't really exist anymore. A lot of restaurants that you go into, you know you walk into McDonald's, you don't order from a person, you order from a screen. If you go into a lot of pub chains, you don't order from a person, you order from the QR code on your table. Like all of these traditional Saturday jobs have gone. Students working behind bars, glass collecting, all the pubs are shut, and that is why young people can't get jobs. Like by the time I'd finished uni, I had five years work experience, five years of doing stuff I didn't really wanna do, dragging myself out of bed to go in, working with other people, working with customers, taking direction, all that stuff that employers look for, but they don't really look for in the Saturday job. Like Saturday jobs, the jobs that we all did when we were younger, employers just accepted that they would have to bring people in, they'd have no experience, and they would train them. But those jobs have gone now, and that is why young people are struggling to get jobs, because they just don't exist anymore.
