Dhal, dal, dholl… however you say it, this is comfort food. 🤎 This is exactly how my mum makes hers — creamy pea dhal with brinjal, cooked down with plenty of aromatics and spices. Simple, homely and the kind of food I grew up eating. Quick clarification: When I said “Tamils call it dholl,” I meant South African Tamils, not Tamils globally or that “dholl” is a Tamil word. In South Africa, dholl is part of our South African Indian food vocabulary and is used across families and communities. Our terminology has evolved over generations and doesn’t always match the words used in India today.
