BY THE NUMBERS: TRACKING MARYLAND'S ICE "SURGE"

I'm Blair Sable in Columbia. Advocates are tracking what they call a current ICE enforcement "surge" across the state. The hardest hit areas they say are Baltimore City, Baltimore County and Montgomery County, as well as here in Howard County where just in the last two weeks, 20 ice sightings have been reported, including here on Phelps Loop Drive. WMAR2 News witnessed the spread of ICE officers alongside Howard County Police last Tuesday in the Italiano parking lot. This woman, who did not wish to be identified by name, tells us she saw one man being detained by them. But it was disturbing. This isn't what we should be doing. Another eyewitness told us off camera that a driver they were targeting had hit an ICE officer with his vehicle. Only weeks after the White House had lifted a ban on all traffic stops. Howard County Police say they are investigating a pedestrian who was struck but did not confirm nor deny the witness's statements that the person hit was an immigration enforcement officer. A DHS spokesperson also did not confirm or deny the details about the case, telling WMAR2 News it does not discuss ongoing or future operations. Neither Howard County nor its police department are tracking them, but Casa and advocacy organization has with its rapid response hotline at 1-888-214-6016 is really difficult to determine where they're going to do these detentions and raids. And unfortunately, from our own perspective, we see that they're spreading out more widely throughout the state. It's received more than 200 calls since July 1st and nearly 226 detainments. 10 of which, Lady Garcia, director of Health and Human Services, says have happened in Howard County in the last two weeks. They come shortly after authorities in Texas arrested Darwin Carcano Santiago, an undocumented immigrant from Honduras, accused of murdering his girlfriend in Colombia and fleeing late month. No matter the reason, Garcia says the organization continues to connect families with legal and wrap-around services. We want to encourage families to be prepared. We have seen a lot of cases where unfortunately they're facing a lot of financial hardship, they don't have the accommodations in place that can help us. It could happen again.
