If you're a woman and you give even half a percentage of our women's rights, not how about having these nonsensical discussions on this app used to divide us, then please listen forward. I have a way to help. A few days ago, I made a video regarding women in Ethiopia losing their rights, little children, little girls getting robbed and abused. It's a literal horror show what's happening over there. But it also came to my attention that there's a petition that I can spread so we can actually help stop this madness. The main aims of the petition is to demand that the Ethiopian government formally declare violence against women and girls, including femicide and sexual violence, a National Crisis, requiring an immediate, whole-of-government emergency response. Now, before you say the petition is not going to do anything. This time last year, I helped spread the petition regarding the gender-based violence happening in South Africa where everybody also changed their profile picture to purple. And from this petition, we were able to create such online and offline outrage to the extent that the South African government had no choice but to declare gender-based violence a national emergency in South Africa. So don't you dare try and tell me that we can't do the same for the women in Ethiopia. We did it before. The petition already has over 84,000 signatures as of me posting this video. And I urge you seriously to read the stories that are mentioned within the petition of real experiences of women, young girls being mistreated in Ethiopia. Three years ago, 32-year-old Zewdu Haftu was dragged by the hair and fatally crushed with a car on a busy street in Mekelle simply for resisting an attempted sexual assault. Although her murderers Yared Gebreselassie, who also admitted to killing another young woman, Mulubrihan Mekonnen, and Angesom Hallemariam were initially sentenced to life in prison, they were set free by the Central Court of Mekelle citing the disappearance from file of a key piece of evidence. Keneni Adugna, a 25-year-old engineer and social media influencer, died on 10 March 2025 after reportedly falling from the fifth floor of an apartment she shared with her partner, musician Andualem Gosa. Andualem was initially detained as a suspect but was subsequently released due to "lack of evidence" even though there is multiple evidence that indicate physical abuse and the case could be a femicide. He was released with no proper investigation and court trial. Heaven Awot, a 7-year-old girl from Bahir Dar, was raped, strangled, severely mutilated and murdered in August 2023. Her convicted rapist and murderer, Getnet Baye, was sentenced to 25 years in prison and reduced to 21 years through an appeal despite endless calls for a harsher sentence. These cases were closely followed by other femicide incidents including the case of Ikram, Liza and countless other women and girls whose names have filled our feeds, the pursuit of justice is repeatedly derailed by missing files, opaque legal processes, and broken systems. These are not isolated tragedies; they are the symptoms of a structural emergency. How YOU can help women in Ethiopia. Sign this petition.
