Before the pandemic, attendance at English mainstream state schools was regularly above 95%. The figure that matters more is persistent absence — missing at least 10% of sessions. If you're going to school in September, you should be aware of the new attendance targets that's going to give your school a new way to monitor you alongside escalate if needed. Now, before you freak out, this is not going to be some sort of blanket rule that means that if you get under 100%, that means that you're going to be permanently excluded or suspended. But what this does mean is that if your attendance falls below 90%, it could be noted as persistent absence, which then could be escalated. You see, the Department of Education is setting an individual attendance target for each school. And the target is aimed at the school, not the national attendance threshold for each individual child. And so if a child gets noted down as a persistent absent child, it doesn't automatically mean that they're going to be suspended or anything like that. But what it does mean is that the school has the grounds to investigate. Though keep in mind, enforcement against parents could eventually lead to attendance penalty notices, parenting orders, or even court action. But honestly, what do you guys think?
