My kid wanted AirPods. I didn't say yes and I didn't say no. I told him to pitch me. I mean an actual pitch. What they cost, why he wants them, and what he is willing to do to close the gap between what he's got and how much they cost. He rolled his eyes at me. Then he went back thinking, building a plan. The AirPods were on the other side of what he wanted. He then came back with his plan. The money that he had saved part covers part of it. And extra work will cover the other part. He had a list of what that work was. Priced out. Seven years old, standing in my kitchen, presenting in terms negotiated. We negotiated a few of the line items because they were priced like a Manhattan firm. Shook on it. A real deal. A real negotiation. And here's what he actually got. Not the AirPods. He got the experience of turning a want into a plan and into a deal. And once a kid feels that one time, begging starts to feel beneath them. That's the whole trick. I'm not trying to raise kids who are told yes all the time. I'm raising kids who build the yes themselves. Anything my kids can pitch me, one day they can pitch the entire world.
