First things first, force is an interaction. And the way we think about force in sport has to go far beyond how much weight somebody can lift in the gym. What you’re seeing here is ground reaction force or GRF. This doesn’t mean Bolt simply “pushed 1,00lb into the ground” with one leg. His foot interacts with the ground, he exerts force against it and the ground exerts an equal and opposite force back against him. Physics for the win One analysis of Bolt at maximal velocity reported ground contacts of just 86 milliseconds and peak vertical ground reaction forces of 4.2× bodyweight. That force comes from a host of things… muscular force, tendons, position, timing, momentum, and how efficiently he interacts with the ground. Getting stronger can absolutely increase the physical capacities available to the athlete. But strength is only one piece of the puzzle. You still have to organize and express those capacities. That’s why sprinting is both a skill AND a physical quality. If you want to see how I develop those qualities together, Speed Kills breaks down how I program sprinting alongside jumping, strength and conditioning and has been used by over 1,200 coaches and athletes. Maximum Output, the follow up to Speed Kills, is coming soon with completely new programming and a detailed explanation of what I’ve changed and why. And Strength X Speed Block 1 is live now. It’s exactly how I train: speed, power, strength and muscle. Each block is only available for 30 days before it comes down and the next block replaces it.
