These are the 5 hacks every lawyer needs to use. 1. Type *** in the CC line before you draft. Outlook won’t let you send until you remove it. So you can write the angry draft, the half-finished draft, the “I’ll fix this later” draft, with zero risk of an accidental send. 2. Turn on a 1-minute send delay. File → Rules → apply to all messages → defer delivery by 1 minute. Every “wait, no attachment” and “wait, wrong Sarah” becomes a non-event. On iPhone it’s Settings → Apps → Mail → Undo Send Delay. 3. Build an “Ignore” folder. Rules that auto-route newsletters, firm announcements and CPD spam out of your inbox. Check it once a day. Your inbox becomes things that actually need you, not 200 unread from Facilities. 4. Rename the subject line when the topic changes. “RE: RE: FW: Project Falcon” tells you nothing in two years. “Project Falcon – executed SPA + disclosure letter” is findable in three seconds when the partner asks at 11pm. 5. Auto-file emails Filing emails is a pain, to put each email in the right matter, under the right workstream. Create rules to autofile so they are easy to find. #lawyer #biglaw #emails #outlook
